The legacy of absinthe as a mysterious, addictive, and mind-altering drink continues to this day.
Although the hallucinations or “lucid-drunkenness” have never been confirmed scientifically, absinthe gained notoriety with the temperance movement as the beverage became associated with violent crimes and social disorder.
A critic once said, “Absinthe makes you crazy and criminal, provokes epilepsy and tuberculosis, and has killed thousands of French people. It makes a ferocious beast of a man, a martyr of a woman, a degenerate of the infant, and it disorganizes the family and menaces the future of the country.”
None of this, of course, has ever been confirmed, but heavy criticism played a large role in the eventual prohibition of this controversial beverage.
In recent years, however, absinthe has enjoyed a re-emergence as most international bans have been lifted.
